The Rose were back on league duty after their comprehensive win vs Bo'ness Utd in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup on Tuesday. Manager Robbie Horn made three changes to the midweek line up with Moyes, Docherty and Young making way for Scott Gray, Martyniuk and Hunter as he continues to rotate his small squad due to injuries and players unavailable for selection.
Bonnyrigg started on the front foot and as early as the second minute were pleading for a spot kick as a cross from Gray hit a Uni hand in the opposition's box but all that was given was a corner. Six minutes later from a series of similar corners from Gray the away side took the lead, with MCGACHIE rising highest to head into the net for his first goal since the end of July after an extensive period out due to injury.
Fry in the Uni goal did well to stop efforts from Gray and Hunter and the latter did well to make space available after cutting in from the right wing but the defense did well to stop him getting a strike away. As a double rainbow appeared behind the impressive Forthbank surface it was the Rose that went to the interval the happier of the two sides.
It wasn't long into the second period before the students had their best chance of the game. On forty eight minutes a pinpoint cross from Berry from the left gave McMaster an open goal for the equaliser, but failed to capitalise much to his frustration and the ensuing beration of Weir to his defenders for giving up the opportunity in the first place.
Calmness was restored for the large away support five minutes later when perseverence by both Hunter and then Brett chasing down lost causes and their subsequent challenges allowed the former to break into the Stirling box, who then unselfishly squared to MCGACHIE to calmly slot home for his double.
On fifty two minutes Hunter, cutting in from the same right side, decided to take this chance on himself with a shot that had beaten Fry but not the un-named defender who did well to slide behind the ball for a clearance which would have been a third for the Rose.
Chris Geddes had seen enough at this stage and decided to put on regular starters Mailer and Jarvis in place of Hall and McMaster. Both players made an immediate impact to the home side's attacking impetus but it was Bonnyrigg that scored the next and final goal of the game. With the ball played forward it was substitute Ross Gary that manged to nudge it past the Uni defender into the path of TURNER, who slotted the ball into the corner of Fry's goal on seventy seven minutes.
There was a double substitution for Rose three minutes later with young starlets Neave, who had recently signed a pro contract from the U20s and Docherty for goalscorers McGachie and Turner.
Another impressive away win from the Rose against a Stirling Uni side that play a style of football that is impressive on the eye but a lot of it in truth was in front of the resolute Rose defense. They have bigger fish to fry in the coming days with a potential BUCS league win and good luck to them in their efforts. Not easy for a team that has to play in two leagues and have a limited pool to choose from but they seem to be able to manage it on both fronts.
