East Kilbride 0 Bonnyrigg Rose 1
Report by John Gilmour
Conditions were similar to last week’s game as the rain lashed down but as East Kilbride play on an artificial surface there was no danger of the match being abandoned. For gaffer Robbie Horn it was yet another job well done, “I again have to give full credit to the players who responded to the conditions and got the result we wanted. We had selection problems but everyone played their part. We thought we might get around an hour from Keiran (McGachie) but he was determined to stay on and get a result.”
Bonnrigg were short on personnel with two of the under 20s side travelling to fill the bench but it was a strong line up from the Rose against last season’s champions. Bonnyrigg started well creating chances without taking the lead. They had the ball in the back of the net twice with the referee ruling both out to the Rose supporters’ disgust. The home side had the lion's share of possession but the majority of it was in their own half, with Rose happy to sit in and hit on the counter attack.
Into the second half and again Bonnyrigg pressed hard for the opener. Chances came and went without success. Then in the 70th minute East Kilbride were down to ten men after Kieran Gibbons was given a straight red card for an ill timed challenge on Jonny Brown. Nine minutes later and Jonny Brown made them pay for that when he took a through ball from Neil Martynuik and slammed home what turned out to be the winner. In the closing minutes lively substitute Jamie Docherty had a gilt edged chance to double the lead but McGinley did well to nullify the danger.
It was another 3 huge points for the Rose to go to the home of the current champions as the season hots up.
Manager Interview.
“It was a job well done by the lads. Another 3 points but we’re not getting carried away. We still have a lot of big games coming up and there’s still a lot to play for. We had selection problems today but everyone responded. Jonny Brown did the business again and it is great to have a defender who gives us that option. I’d like to thank the support who again have turned out in dreadful weather to cheer us on. The next 2 games are at home after a while on the road but they are big ones and we must remain focused.”
Daniel Baur was delighted afterwards, “It’s great to get back into the side and get a result. Conditions were dreadful but it was the same for both sides. We stuck at it today and again Jonny comes up with the goods. That’s 3 times in as many weeks he’s scored the decisive goal for us. We know we have a couple of huge game coming up but we’re confident we can meet that challenge.”
