Bonnyrigg Rose 2 East Kilbride 0
A much improved performance from last weekend as the Rose overran last seasons Champions East Kilbride thanks to superb finishes from Neil Martynuik and Jamie Devlin.
“That was a very good performance from the players today. We had a talk together in the dressing room after the Gretna game. As a group we weren’t happy with the way we were playing and got a response from the players on Tuesday night against Edinburgh University. We then stepped up a level again today and we had to as East Kilbride are a top side. I’ve no doubt East Kilbride will be there in the mix at the end of the season but we will just keep winning games and see where it takes us. We have a couple of important cup games now which gives us a wee break from the league.” was boss Robbie Horn’s view after the game.
Bonnyrigg started the game brightly and were soon pressing hard for an opener. Ross Gray had a couple of good chances to open their account but missed when in good positions. East Kilbride though were dangerous and keeper Mark Weir was called on to keep the game goalless until in the 31st minute when the Rose grabbed the lead with a super goal from full back Neil Martynuik. Lewis Turner crossed to the back post for Lee Currie to head back into Martynuik's path and he turned inside and unleashed a bullet into the top corner for a great finish.
Into the 2nd half and Bonnyrigg continued their push for another goal. George Hunter and Turner both had chances to double their lead but good goalkeeping kept the lead to that single goal. East Kilbride were now finding their feet and in the 75th minute they were awarded a dubious penalty by the referee when keeper Mark Weir was adjudged to have brought down winger Cairns. The Rose players complained bitterly to the referee who to his credit walked over to his assistant and after some words overruled the decision and awarded a bounce ball which the East Kilbride player rolled back to Weir. A brave decision, the correct one, a good call by referee Alex Shepherd to his credit.
East Kilbride then faced another tough call when central defender Reid was given a straight red card for an off the ball kick leaving them an uphill task ahead of them. Then with only 5 minutes remaining the Rose scored again with another super finish from sub Jamie Devlin; this time a great solo effort running 40 yards before curling the ball past the keeper and into the net.
A thoroughly deserved win for Bonnyrigg as they return to the kind of form the support has been enjoying this season and a couple of great goals into the bargain. For full back Neil Martynuik it was a good afternoon, “This was a good win for us today as East Kilbride showed they are a good side. I think though we raise our game for big ones like this and the lads showed a great attitude today. I’m naturally left footed but I’m comfortable on my right and the ball fell nicely for me so it was nice to hit it sweetly. We played some good football today and hopefully pleased our support. Dev (Jamie Devlin) scored our 2nd with a great finish and I’m pleased for him as he wasn’t feeling great before the game. This season is turning out to be better than we expected so hopefully we can keep the run going.”
Robbie’s Interview.
“It was a good response again from the players today and good news on Keiran’s(McGachie) front as the doctor says he doesn’t need surgery after all and may be back quicker than we thought, so it’s been a good day for us all round. I thought we could have been further ahead in the 1st half but we didn’t take our chances until Neil hit that one.
The 2nd half East Kilbride came into the game more but our defending as a team were excellent. Jamie came on scored another great goal and we’re just delighted with what is 3 massive points. We have Threave Rovers at home next week then the Scottish so it’s a busy time ahead but I’m pleased that we are getting back to form and again show the depth of quality that we have in our squad.”
