Cumbernauld Colts 0 Bonnyrigg Rose 2
Report by John Gilmour
Bonnyrigg, playing a terrific brand of football, swept aside Cumbernauld Colts, a side making headways in the Lowland League. The big games are coming thick and fast but this Bonnyrigg side fear no one and it’s showing on the pitch. Friday night saw a return for winger Lewis Turner and he took the opportunity to show how important he is to the squad, “I’ve been injured and with the team playing so well it was going to be hard to get back in. We didn’t know what to expect from Cumbernauld so we were cautious at first but we settled and started playing good football. It’s been frustrating sitting on the bench so I’m delighted to be involved again. It’s turning out to be a great season so far with a lot of adventures to come with the likes of the Scottish Cup where we have history”
Bonnyrigg did take time to settle but when they did Cumbernauld couldn’t handle them. Chances went a begging until in the 31st minute they got the breakthrough they deserved: a long low cross to the back post saw George Hunter slam the ball home. Only 10 minutes later and they were in again. This time a cross from Turner had Dean Brett glancing a fine header home.
Bonnyrigg took the game to the hosts quickly after the break to the backdrop of distant drums forcing keeper Jon Grier into 3 fabulous saves to keep the score down, but there were no more goals as the Rose ran out comfortable winners to maintain their top spot in the table.
Overall Bonnyrigg played some superb football in beating Cumbernauld in the manner they did. Few teams could compete if the Rose can maintain this standard, that’s the hard part.
Managers Interview
Robbie Horn was pleased with the result and the football played, “It was new territory for us but once we calmed down we were confident we would win. It was only 2 goals but the keeper played a huge part in that. He had several great saves to keep the score down. However it was the football we played that was really satisfying; we strung a lot of good passes around the pitch which Cumbernauld couldn’t handle. The scoreline could have been a lot more but we’re happy to be going home with another 3 points in the bag, a clean sheet and still top of the table; a good nights work.”
