Bonnyrigg Rose 3 East Stirlingshire 1
Report by John Gilmour
This top of the table clash proved to be a resounding success for Bonnyrigg as they returned to top spot thanks to a super double from the magic left foot of the “Maestro” that is Lee Currie.
“It was good to get a double today but I should have had more. It was always going to be a tough game against a side who scored 9 last week but the lads stood up to the test and our defence were solid. George (Hunter) scored a terrific 3rd goal showing he’s settled in well and he’ll be a really good signing for us.” said Lee after the game.
There was a minutes silence for “Auchinleck” Alec Mills & Neil Daniels before the game as a tribute which was impeccably observed by the 500 strong crowd.
There were doubts as to whether the game would go ahead given the rainfall over the preceding twenty four hours as a pitch inspection was called early Saturday morning, but the game kicked off in hot sunshine with the Rose pushing forward early looking for a quick goal to settle their nerves. They didn’t have long to wait before they were awarded a free kick in Currie territory after 15 minutes. Then with everyone in the ground holding their breaths, he stepped up and smashed an unstoppable drive in off the bar to take the lead, with McGachie following up the rebound just to make sure but the goal was Currie's to claim. Minutes later he did exactly the same except the ball came crashing off the bar and out to safety. George Hunter was the next to hit woodwork when his delicate flick hit the post and into the keepers arms. East Stirling equalised in the 38th minute when Millar calmly side footed a low cross past Mark Weir to take the teams in level at the break.
Bonnyrigg started the 2nd half again pushing hard and got their rewards with another super strike from Currie after 56 minutes. He drilled the ball hard and low into the bottom corner leaving the keeper stranded. Now in control with 10 minutes remaining they grabbed the decisive 3rd when George Hunter took it on himself before firing a 25 yard volley into the net. East Stirling pressed forward looking for a step hold back into the game but the Rose defence were solid at the back giving nothing away.
This was a very good win for the Rose as boss Robbie Horn outlined in his interview after the game.
The Managers Interview.
"Today’s result was a great win for us with all things considered. Bonnyrigg are possibly underdogs in this League because there are a lot of big spending clubs around. I’m not saying we’re not, but the club have had to spend a lot of money in ground improvements which we will benefit from in seasons to come. Clubs such as East Stirlingshire have a much bigger player pool than us, so for us to beat clubs like this is a testament to the quality we have. Shire have a squad of 24 players while we have 18: 18 players though who are a really tight knit unit who play superb football. Today’s result shows that we are a match for anyone in this League and with the support of our great fans we are looking forward to some great adventures ahead. I don’t like singling out anyone for attention but Lee was Man of the Match for me with everyone played their part, especially our defence."
