In spite of a spirited first half display, Bonnyrigg Rose let their lead slip to draw 2-2 with Cowdenbeath at Central Park.
Jonny Stewart made two changes to the side that drew with Spartans in midweek. Bradley Barrett made way for Scott Robinson and Jack Lyon made just his second start in the Lowland League East, replacing Mark Anderson.
Seeking a first win since September, Rose started on the front foot and broke through after twelve minutes.
Cowdenbeath had been careless on the ball a number of times in the early stages and played a pass straight to Billy King in midfield. The Rose wide man drove forward before picking out the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty box for a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after the thirty-eight minute mark, Cowdenbeath made their way into the Rose box and were awarded a penalty for a foul committed by Kieran Somerville.
It wasn’t to be for Rhys Walker, however, as Jack Lyon made a brilliant save down to his left to keep Rose ahead.
Kerr Young’s afternoon was abruptly ended with a nasty injury and Lee Currie made his return to action.
Just prior to added time at the end of the first half, Rose doubled their advantage. A neat string of passes between Alassan Jones, Laurie Devine and Jordan Smith let the former in behind - and while Dion Gear was able to save his attempt, the rebound fell to Scott Robinson who instinctively cushioned the ball home for a 2-0 lead.
Cowdenbeath stayed focused and hit back with the last act of the first half. After his side won a free kick down the left hand side, Stuart McDowell sent an inviting ball towards the back post for Nathaniel Wedderburn to head into the back of the net, reducing the deficit to just one.
Cowdenbeath grew into the game in the second half and were able to pepper the Rose box with a number of crosses which lacked a finishing touch, at least up until the seventy-fourth minute.
A deep ball into the penalty box was played back across goal by Bryan Mwangi and Wedderburn pounced once more to score his and Cowdenbeath’s second, levelling the game at 2-2.
Just two minutes later, Rhys Walker’s afternoon went from bad to worse as he received a second yellow card for a crunching tackle on Kieran Somerville.
Rose pushed for a late winner but were unable to take their chances. Alassan Jones picked up the ball from a short corner and blasted into the side netting, and shortly after that Jordan Smith gathered the ball in the box but could only fire straight at Gear.
Rose currently sit seventh in the table with nineteen points and have a week of rest before hosting Bo’ness United on October 27th.
