An early Neil Martyniuk penalty wasn’t enough to cancel out a quickfire Spartans double as Rose exited the Scottish Cup on Saturday.
Rose seemed to pose more threat in the opening minutes after a nice linkup between Currie and Martyniuk, however Spartans hit the front foot in the 10th minute after Watson bundled home from a corner.
Two minutes later, Spartans doubled their lead after a well taken free kick from Mark Stowe caught Anderson out of position and curled into the top corner.
Rose didn’t let their heads drop, and in the 23rd minute they found their equaliser in the form of a penalty. After a loose ball hit a Spartans hand, Neil Martyniuk stepped up and struck a driven penalty under Martin to half the deficit.
Chances were scrappy between the two teams for the remainder of the half, with Rose’s best chance coming from a floated ball into the box which Higginbotham could only head over.
Anderson was called into action early on in the second half, tipping an effort over the bar from a Spartans counterattack.
Rose were on the front foot for the majority of the half, and their best chance came when Martyniuk had a shooting chance inside of the box, only to be blocked in doing so.
Bonnyrigg made two throws of the dice via substitutes, with Kian Speirs and Rudi Bryce coming on to replace Kallum Higginbotham and Jay McGarva.
Alas, it wasn’t to be for Rose as the referee’s full-time whistle sounded. Jonny Stewart’s men now look ahead to a crucial league tie against Linlithgow Rose next Saturday.
