Jay McGarva scored his first goal in Bonnyrigg Rose colours to help send Jonny Stewart’s side into the third round of the Scottish Cup.
The defender burst forward down the left flank and was found in space over the top by Dunfermline loanee Daniel Dobbie, before coolly rolling his left-footed finish past an outstretched Harry Broun.
Cumbernauld responded well to their early setback and arguably should have levelled a few minutes later. Abraham Osemeke burst down the right wing before driving a ball across the 18 yard box - only for the unmarked William Mortimer to poke well wide.
Danny Dobbie was a lively presence in midfield for the visitors and came close to doubling the advantage after running the length of the pitch with the ball and firing just wide of the post.
Colts came out in the second half looking a different team and were seeing plenty more of the ball. For the opening fifteen minutes after the interval, plenty of football was being played in and around the Rose penalty box.
They couldn’t take advantage of their positive spell, and fell two behind in freakish fashion.
Cammie Ross picked up the ball 30 yards from goal and a change of pace let him burst forward. Liam Allison cut across the Rose striker and poked the ball off his foot - only to somehow curl it into his own top corner from the edge of the area.
It would have been a spectacular finish at the other end.
A scramble from a Billy King corner nearly caused another own goal for Cumbernauld. A loose ball nearly trickled over the goal line before the resulting clearance cannoned off a yellow shirt and landed on the roof of the net.
Ross Connelly wasn’t a busy man in goal but made two solid saves late on to prevent any nerves late on.
It was enough to see the Rose win 2-0 and cement their place in the third round of the Scottish Cup. They’re back in league action next Saturday, facing Civil Service Strollers at New Dundas Park.
