Neil Martyniuk’s first half penalty was not enough to maintain Bonnyrigg Rose’s perfect league record at New Dundas Park, as Linlithgow Rose clinched the Lowland League title with a 2-1 win.
Jonny Stewart made one change to the side that drew 2-2 with Broxburn Athletic as Rudi Bryce replaced the unavailable Billy King.
Bonnyrigg Rose were always in need of a few miracles, needing to win by six goals and a favour from Caledonian Braves in order to win the Lowland League.
And a few minutes after Linlithgow struck the crossbar from a corner, Neil Martyniuk drew a foul in the penalty area.
The skipper coolly rolled past Cameron Binnie for a 1-0 lead.
Rose looked to press home their advantage, the best chances of which fell to Cammie Ross who would have extended the lead had it not been for a number of fine saves from Binnie.
Linlithgow picked up the tempo towards the end of the half and forced Ross Connelly into action. Shortly after acrobatically tipping a looping header over the crossbar, the Rose goalkeeper made himself big to deny Blair Henderson from close range.
Needing at least two goals in the second half to get one hand on the title, Linlithgow Rose came out of the blocks a different team and found themselves level after just fifteen minutes.
Not long after Josh Laing produced a superb goal-line clearance Linlithgow put more pressure on, and Matt Berry rifled a low finish past Connelly to equalise.
The 300 travelling Linlithgow Rose supporters were sent into pandemonium after sixty-three minutes.
Calum Rae’s inswinging corner was turned home by Craig Smith.
Trailing 2-1, Bonnyrigg Rose attempted to break down a disciplined Linlithgow defence. Alassan Jones came close late on with a header from just inside the 18 yard box, but Binnie did well to tip his effort over the crossbar.
The result saw Linlithgow Rose crowned champions of the Lowland League, with Bonnyrigg Rose and Clydebank missing out in spite of their brilliant campaigns respectively.
Bonnyrigg Rose will be looking to bounce back against Camelon Juniors in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup Final next Sunday.
