Bonnyrigg Rose delivered a commanding performance at New Dundas Park this afternoon, securing a 4–0 victory over East Stirlingshire in the Lowland League.
Rose made a bright start and were handed an early chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot inside seven minutes when Alassan Jones was brought down, but Jay Cantley produced a fine save to deny Neil Martyniuk and keep the scores level. They didn’t have to wait long to make the breakthrough though, as Josh Laing rose highest at the back post to power a header past Cantley in the 12th minute.
East Stirlingshire threatened a response midway through the half when the ball broke kindly to McRoberts inside the box, but Ross Connelly produced an outstanding point-blank save to maintain the lead. Rose continued to press, with Billy King weaving his way into the box only to be denied by Cantley, while Alassan Jones went close on two occasions as the home side went into the break firmly in control but with a only a slender one goal lead to show for it.
Bonnyrigg picked up where they left off after the interval, doubling their advantage just three minutes into the second half. Jones reacted quickest to a loose ball in the centre of the box and struck to make it 2–0. Moments later, Lee Currie came agonisingly close with a free kick that struck the crossbar.
The third goal soon followed, with Josh Laing producing an exquisite pass to pick out Jay McGarva at the back post, who calmly finished to put the game beyond doubt. The scoring was completed late on when Billy King was perfectly placed inside the six-yard box to poke home from close range, rounding off an excellent afternoon.
Attention now turns to cup action on Tuesday night, as Bonnyrigg Rose travel to Berwick Rangers in the Lowland League Cup.
