The Rose' seven game unbeaten streak was ended at Foresters Park courtesy of a late goal.
Both sides struggled to get a foothold in the game in the early stages although hosts Tranent would find a foothold, striking the crossbar directly from a corner and working the Bonnyrigg defence hard, who remained disciplined under growing pressure.
Bonnyrigg came out revitalised at the beginning of the second half and saw far more possession. Quality was lacking in the final third, however, and several opportunities to test Tranent goalkeeper Kelby Mason were not taken.
Dean Hoskins rose to meet a deep corner only to see his header to drop narrowly wide of the back post in what was arguably the best chance of the second half.
Control steadily slipped over the last twenty minutes and Tranent looked to have taken the lead through Harry Girdwood, who was denied by a raised flag for offside.
What looked to be a stalemate took a cruel turn at the death when Tranent were awarded a penalty in the final minute of play. Dean Brett subsequently scored from the spot to seal all three points for his side.
The Rose will be looking to bounce back on the road next Saturday, facing Cowdenbeath Central in the South Challenge cup.
