After a weekend with no football last week, Bonnyrigg Rose returned to action and returned to the road when they made the long trip north to Borough Briggs to face unbeaten Elgin City.
A number of injuries meant a number of changes to Calum Elliot's starting eleven, with a trialist slotting in at centre-back alongside captain Kerr Young. Sean Murphy, Aaron Arnott and Dean Watson also made their way into the team.
The early stages of the game were scrappy, with chances proving hard to come by for both sides. Russell Dingwall has been a thorn in Rose's side in previous meetings between the two sides, and he looked to lay down an early marker when his headed effort was saved by Tom Ritchie.
Bradley Barrett had a sight of goal but could only fire over Aidan Galvin's crossbar from long-range, with Dajon Golding missing from a similar distance at the other end moments later.
Elgin captain Ross Draper was a surprise threat in front of goal, forcing a save from Ritchie with a low-driven shot and heading narrowly wide a few minutes later.
There was nothing to separate the teams going into the break, and the action began to heat up in the second period.
Lewis Hyde weaved his way into the Rose box but could only fire into the side-netting, the first chance of the second-half.
Rose's biggest opportunity of the match came shortly after, and after some good play from Ben Scarborough down the left, he sent a high ball into the box where Kallum Higginbotham expertly volleyed it into the ground and past Galvin to give Rose the lead.
Rose looked set to hold out for a precious 3 points, but Elgin threw everything at it late in the game, Olly McDonald prodding past Ritchie after a scramble in the box to bring the Black and Whites level.
Dingwall would show his quality in the dying embers of the game as he placed a low free-kick into Ritchie's bottom-left corner to hand Elgin the points in the 94th minute.
The late dagger may be hard to stomach, but Rose will be looking to pick themselves back up when they make the trip to Forthbank to face Stirling Albion next weekend.
