Bonnyrigg Rose began their 2024/25 William Hill League 2 campaign with a home match against Peterhead at New Dundas Park.
Calum Elliot made 1 change from last weekend's late defeat against Arbroath in the Premier Sports Cup, with Dean Watson making way for Ben Scarborough on the wing.
Peterhead’s Rory McAllister had the first chance of the afternoon in the 5th minute when he went one-on-one with the keeper, but his shot was straight at Aberdeen loanee Tom Ritchie.
Rose’s first opportunity came in the 10th minute, but captain Kerr Young’s header was easily claimed by Stuart McKenzie.
Kallum Higginbotham had a golden opportunity in the 6-yard box after a cutback from Ben Scarborough, but he couldn’t apply the finishing touch.
In the 30th minute, Max Barry saw his powerful low-driven shot, but Ritchie managed to get a hand to it. Sean Murphy closed the second half with a long-ranged shot from outside the box saved by the Peterhead goalkeeper.
The second half began with some excellent play from Player of the Match Sean Murphy, who excellently won back possession and took the ball down the left channel, finding Aaron Arnott, whose volley was a little too high.
Young had another chance in the 65th minute, heading just wide of goal at the back post.
In the 71st minute, Andrew McCarthy fired a shot from the edge of the box, but his effort went narrowly over Ritchie's crossbar.
Peterhead stole all three points in the dying minutes as Ben Armour rifled a shot that Ritchie got a strong hand to, but it wasn’t enough to stop the substitute’s effort.
To close out a frustrating ending for Rose, Angus Mailer was shown a red card after a scary-looking clash of heads with Cieran Dunne.
The Rose will now look ahead to next week's fixture against The Spartans at Ainslie Park as they continue the new league season.
