We go again!

This Saturday see’s us kick off our second season in the cinch following a dramatic final day showdown against Elgin City last season. A Keiran McGachie brace followed by a late Scott Gray strike secured our safety and ensured we’d be playing SPFL football for another season.

Just like last season, the fixture computer has given us a home fixture on the opening weekend. This time around we welcome Dumbarton to New Dundas Park. The Son’s proved to be a thorn in our side last term as they remained unbeaten against us after four meetings. Two narrow 1-0 defeats at the Rock along with a 1-1 draw and 2-0 defeat at NDP in what were extremely tight encounters. That was no different when we met again just a few weeks ago in the Viaplay Cup group stage. A visit to the Rock ended in a 0-0 draw with only a penalty shootout won by the hosts separating the sides.

Even if we go all the way back to 2016 and our famous Scottish Cup win over Saturday’s visitors, a 0-0 stalemate at NDP was followed up by a late single goal victory for the Rose in the replay at the Rock. If all of the previous, notoriously tight contests are anything to go by, this Saturday will be much the same.

With the exception of Tuesday night’s 3-1 defeat to Kilmarnock B at Rugby Park in the SPFL Trust Trophy, the Rose defence has looked fairly solid going into Saturday. Our Viaplay Cup group campaign ended with narrow, single goal defeats to full time Premiership and Championship opposition in Dundee, Inverness and Airdrie, as well as the aforementioned goalless draw against Dumbarton. There were plenty of positives to take from those games with some impressive defence displays as well as a number of chances created. That said, we only registered a single goal, Keiran McGachie’s late consolation at Inverness, that’s something that’ll need to be improved on if we’re to get off to a winning start on Saturday.

Dumbarton’s Viaplay Cup campaign saw them fall to a 2-0 defeat to Airdrie before bouncing back with an impressive 2-1 win in the Highlands against Inverness. They followed that up with a goalless draw against ourselves before registering a bonus point by winning the penalty shootout. They rounded off their campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Dundee with skipper Mark Durnan seeing red, ensuring that like ourselves, it was an early exit from the competition.
