Robbie Horn named an unchanged Rose XI for the visit of Stranraer to New Dundas Park on Saturday afternoon. On a high following a vitally important win at Cliftonhill against Albion Rovers, today was a massive opportunity to extend the gap at the foot of the table.
The first half was one lacking chance, but Rose were undoubtedly the better side, with relentless pressing not allowing Stranraer a moment to think on the ball.
It took until almost the 20th minute for the first chance for Rose, as a break following a Stranraer corner saw Kieran Mitchell get in behind but the finish was wayward. Rose threatened again soon after with the most dangerous chance of the first half, Dean Brett with a well-timed pass allowing Mitchell to get in behind and square to Keiran McGachie, but a bobble on the ball's way to the big man made the chance just that bit more difficult and he could only fire into the side-netting.
The second period was similar to the first, except Rose were able to find that finishing touch that was lacking in the first. McGachie held the ball up well in the opposition's final third, but his cross early into the half was just too high for Mitchell. Stranraer's first real chance came just before the hour mark, Aaron Brown finding himself bearing down on goal but Paddy Martin rushed out and made the angle tight and forced the Killie loanee to send his effort wide.
Fans were growing frustrated but in. the 72nd minute that frustration turned to jubilation. A moment of madness at the back from Stranraer as goalkeeper Luke Scullion lost the ball in unfamiliar territory, allowing Keiran McGachie to brush past a few men in blue before placing it into an empty net, and sending NDP wild.
The Rose forward thought he had his second soon after, and so did many behind the goal as his powerful header from a corner was saved on the line by Scullion. A host of changes followed as Rose tried to see out what would be another massive 3 points and Martin produced some goalkeeping heroics at the death, a flying save in the 94th minute to deny a close-range effort which looked a sure-fire goal.
The win over Stranraer moves Bonnyrigg Rose up to 8th in the league, and will look to continue an impressive recent run of away form when they travel to Stenhousemuir next weekend.
