Bonnyrigg Rose made 3 changes to the side that drew to Forfar mid-week, as Jonny Stewart, Scott Gray and Kev Smith made way for Lee Currie, Robbie McGale and Alieu Faye. Rose travelled to Borough Briggs where they took on an Elgin City side that has been in an out of form as of late, and if there was any time to claim victory up north there was none better than today.
The game was quiet in the opening stages, was chances few and far between. The first attempt of the game however went the way of the hosts' as Russell Dingwall was first to test Paddy Martin, and the young stopper gracefully claimed it at his near post.
The first half heated up from there as a dangerous set-piece delivery from Currie was begging to be met by a Rose player but just evaded the reach of Zander Murray. Elgin went close again as the first of many long-range efforts from Ross McEwan was well blocked by Alan Horne. The second attempt from range was stopped by a flying save from Paddy Martin, and the keeper done well to get up to match the follow-up from Tom Findlay and keep the game level heading in to the break.
The final chance of the half fell to Callum Connolly's feet, finding space and jinking away from two Elgin defenders following a Rose set-piece, but was denied by the feet of keeper Thomas McHale
Elgin found themselves in a bit more space in the second half, a loose ball falling the way of Mitchell Taylor who whose powerful effort was palmed away by Martin. Russell Dingwall found himself in space soon after, but scuffed his shot as it rolled wide.
Attacking changes followed as Rose remained competitive in the game, Ross Gray, Keiran McGachie and Kieran Mitchell coming on for Aaron Arnott, Alieu Faye and Zander Murray.
The game was getting a bit hectic heading into the later stages, and that was when Rose struck. In the 88th minute MOTM Lee Currie sent a set-piece wide for Kieran Mitchell to chase and hang a high ball into the box to which Kerr Young rose highest and his header looped over McHale and nestled in the corner.
A massive result for Rose given other results in the league, and Rose will hope to carry this win over when they travel to Forthbank to take on high-flying Stirling Albion next Saturday.
