A South Challenge Cup victory, snazzy club calendars on sale and a spot on A View from the Terrace. It’s been a solid week for the Rosey Posey but now we eagerly move onto tomorrow as the Scottish Cup returns!
Robbie Horn and his men will travel east to Clackmannanshire, where they will take on Barry Ferguson’s Alloa Athletic at Recreation Park. It’ll be a second trip of the season to the Indodrill for the Rose, with a classic Keiran McGachie winner securing a 1-0 victory over Broomhill earlier this month.
The Wasps may be unbeaten in their last eight Scottish Cup home matches against opposition outside the top four divisions (thank you very much Scottish Cup Twitter admin) but the League One side will surely remain wary of current table-toppers Rose given our most recent high-profile clashes against top opposition.
Following relegation from the Championship last season, Ferguson has managed to stop any further freefall with Alloa currently sitting in sixth-place. Results have been rough as of late, with a defeat to Rangers B in the SPFL Trust Trophy followed up with a slender win over Airdrie, two draws versus Falkirk and Montrose, before last weekend’s home defeat to Dumbarton.
Republic of Ireland internationalist Conor Sammon scored in that defeat but it’s ordinarily Hearts loanee Euan Henderson who’s been striking fear into opposition defences this season, with the youngster grabbing six goals in ten league games so far this season.
As alluded to already, for the Rose this is another opportunity to prove ourselves against SPFL opposition. Dumbarton (in a Championship versus East Superleague clash) were bested in 2016 and a result against Montrose came in the 2019 competition, with high-flying Queen’s Park already held to a draw in the SPFL Trust Trophy this season.
Ironically, perhaps the best showing of this ‘underdog’ mentality ended in defeat. That Dundee defeat in January. Despite the unrewarded heroics of the Rose squad, the nail-biting televised battle still showed the nation what the lads were capable of. And how good Lee Currie is from twelve yards.
The Rose took the lead twice at Dens Park and only succumbed to defeat deep into extra-time - despite only playing one fixture in the three weeks leading up to the game. There are, of course, no such preparation problems this time around. In fact, there have been momentum-building wins for what seems an age.
Emerge as victors tomorrow and the Rose will return home to Bonnyrigg with a fourteenth consecutive win in all competitions. This run began all the way back in mid-September and was extended last weekend with a 4-0 cup win over Coldstream at NDP, as Nathan Evans nabbed a brace while both Bob Wilson and George Hunter found the net, also.
If you’re making the trip to the Indodrill, admission prices are as follows: £18 for adults, £10 for concessions and over-65’s, and £4 for under-16’s. Pay-per-view is £18. ‘Mon the Rose!
