Bonnyrigg Rose kick off a two week break from Lowland League action against Coldstream, in the third round of the South Challenge Cup.
Robbie Horn’s side negotiated their second round tie emphatically, as they put nine past Arniston Rangers at New Dundas Park.
Local lad, and Rose fan, Gary Shearer, struck a ridiculous long-range strike to give the visitors a shock lead. Neil Martyniuk’s header got the hosts back on level terms going into the interval. Then the floodgates opened. Lee Currie, Callum Connolly and Kieran Hall all got in on the act with a goal, while Nathan Evans and Bradley Barratt both bagged braces.
Since progressing to the next round of the South Challenge Cup, Rose have also booked their place in the third round of the Scottish Cup, which will be played next week. In addition, they’ve won all four league matches, scoring eight goals in the process whilst conceding none. Horn’s side couldn’t come into the tie in better form.
Saturday’s opponents, Coldstream FC, saw off fellow East of Scotland 1st Division Conference A outfit – and local rivals –, Tweedmouth Rangers to set up this clash. A brace from Buster Briggs, sandwiched by a header from Ejay Gay, ensured the Streamers had bragging rights as well as a place in the third round.
However, Kieran Ainslie’s side endured a tough afternoon against league leaders, Haddington Athletic, last week and succumbed to a 6-0 defeat.
Anything can happen in a cup game and an enthralling encounter is sure to unfold on Saturday afternoon.
Kick-off is 3pm at New Dundas Park, with tickets priced at £7 for adults, £4 for concessions, while U12s go free with a paying adult. A reminder, that season tickets are not valid for cup competitions.
