The opening chances of the game came from set pieces for both sides. A great Colts corner came flying across goal but no one could get a touch. Minutes later, Lee Currie aimed a free kick at goal, but his hit was punched to safety by Jonathan Grier.
Rose looked to make their mark on the game down the left, with some neat interplay from Dean Hoskins and Currie on the flank. The ball was then cut back to Ross Gray, but his curling shot looped just wide of the goal.
Mark Weir again showed his commanding presence in the Rose goal. A wind-assisted ball saw Luke Main through, but the Rose number one was quick off his line to tackle the midfielder. Weir then did well to parry a powerful shot from Billy Mortimer, which was subsequently cleared by Bob Wilson.
The half ended with Rose’s best passage of play up to that point. Ross Gray picked up the ball and found Dean Brett on the right flank, who clipped the ball on to Scott Gray up the line. Scott then drove to the byline and fired a driven ball across the face of goal, which evaded everyone in red and white, allowing Colts to clear their lines.
Rose would have been hoping to impose themselves on the game more in the second half, but they get off to a nightmare start as the visitors took the lead with just five minutes gone.
Cumbernauld captain Stephen O’Neil but a ball in front the left hand side, with the weather causing all kinds of havoc in the Rose box, allowing Cameron Foy to get something on the cross and put Colts in front.
The home side tried to react quickly, as some more tidy play on the right this time saw Currie teed up, but another curling effort fell just wide of the Colts goal.
George Hunter found himself in behind the backline over on the left and played an inside ball to Ross Gray. In for the Keiran McGachie, Gray then beautifully floated past a Colts defender, but the ball was smothered by Grier.
The task became even harder for the Rose as Currie was sent off for a second bookable offence with just over 20 minutes to go.
Substitute Jordan Smith looked lively once joining the fray, the striker saw his swift turn and strike in the box soar to the right of the Colts goal.
The home side were convinced that the referee was set to award a penalty after a clear tangle of legs upended Brett in the box, but to their disbelief, play was waved on.
The conditions were clearly hampering the Rose, until Scott Gray decided the use them to his advantage. His corner from the left was aimed close to the goal, flying straight into the far corner to bring the hosts level.
Rose began to really crank up the pressure as the clock ticked down, but it looked as though it was Colts who had sealed a winner at the death.
Confusion reigned as a Cumbernauld corner led to a massive goal mouth scramble, and despite the ball crossing the line, the referee adjudged that Weir had been fouled and Bonnyrigg were awarded a free kick.
The wind very nearly gave Rose all three points too, as an Andy Mair cross from the left unexpectedly swirled towards the Colts goal, but Grier did well to adjust his feet and tip the ball over to ensure his team went home with a point.
Rose have a week to prepare for their next game, as Robbie Horn’s side travel to the Falkirk Stadium to take on East Stirlingshire next Saturday.
