Football Nation Qualifying Cup
University of Stirling 0 Bonnyrigg Rose 4
Report by John Gilmour
Bonnyrigg bounced back to winning ways and topple the University of Stirling out of the Football Nation Cup under the floodlights at Forthbank Stadium, sending a message that they are back to normal service after that defeat at Dunipace.
Gaffer Robbie Horn was delighted with the performance and attitude of the squad. “After last Saturday I went away and looked at my performance and asked the players to do the same. I wanted a reaction from the players as Saturday simple wasn't good enough and we let a lot of people down. The players responded exactly how we we wanted and they produced an excellent performance. There was a real hunger about us tonight. It was a really important game for us after Saturday and we didn't want to be knocked out another cup competition for the second time in four days. They were superb in their attitude, hunger and desire and everyone one of them worked their socks off We could have scored more but their keeper had a very good game.”
Bonnyrigg started well and in the 4th minute George Hunter had what looked like a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside , but for a very late offside decision from the linesman. They then proceeded to bombard the Stirling defence with some attractive attacking football and got the result they deserved when in the 18th minute Lee Currie swept home a left foot strike from 20 yards. Stirling keeper Andy Downie was a busy man but he was having a great game and managed to keep the score line at 1 – 0 to half time.
Bonnyrigg stepped up a gear after the break and within 10 minutes of the restart they doubled their lead: Jonny Brown sending over a cross into the 6 yard box for George Hunter to head powerfully into the net. They continued to lay siege on the Stirling goal but keeper Downie again stood up to the barrage until with 10 minutes remaining sub Jamie Docherty stole the show with a superb solo effort taking on the home defence before sliding the ball into the net. Chances were being created for the Rose but again keeper Downie stood tall but even he couldn’t stop a George Hunter strike which took a deflection in the 85th minute which completed the scoring.
Stirling players some good football but lacked any real penetration and Rose keeper Mark Weir was never really troubled as Robbie’s men bounced back to form.
Robbie’s Interview.
“It was a great reaction from the players tonight as they knew what was at stake. The hunger was back and everyone played their part. The subs who came on too did really well with Jamie (Docherty) doing what we know he can and hopefully that goal will give him a lot of confidence. I said before and after the game that players have to fight to get their place in the team and when you get opportunities on the pitch, show me why you should be playing. Put pressure on the players that are playing by working hard in training, in games where you get opportunities and by being professional. The players have a great spirit among them and for me that is just healthy competition to keep pushing to be better. We’ve another big game coming up on Friday against Spartans who have been a top team in the Lowland for a number of seasons now. It’s so important that we keep that level of performance going into Friday's game with a massive 3 points at stake. However we have to be satisfied with the result tonight against a good side, scoring 4 goals, a clean sheet and a very good performance."
