Bonnyrigg Rose 2 Buckie Thistle 0
Report by John Gilmour
The Adventure continues for Bonnyrigg with another step on the way defeating current Highland League leaders Buckie out of the Scottish in style and in front of a huge TV audience on the BBC.
A fantastic result for the Rose on Friday night, giving their loyal support a night to remember, for a very, very long time. Yes, a night to remember under the new floodlights for the first time, live on the BBC with a huge crowd of over 1600 generating a fabulous atmosphere, a tribute to the Rose supporters who turned out in numbers voicing their support for the players. The ground was packed for what turned out to be a super game of football covered by the BBC with all the well known punters in attendance giving a great account of football at this level: with the players responding in style. In fact it was a week of increasing tension as the game drew near, with preparations being cranked up from the previous Saturday, the manager Robbie Horn on BBC Sportsound and the players filmed in the dressing rooms. As for the night itself well the floodlights looked fantastic, the ground held up brilliantly to the heavy rain and the crowd were very well behaved, a tribute to the town itself, something boss Robbie Horn was delighted with, “The town and the support has been brilliant in the build up to this game and there was a lot of pressure on the players but they have deal with that superbly. It’s a huge adventure for everyone and one we want to keep going. The whole town has been buzzing and it's credit to the Club’s Committee who have worked incredibly hard in the build up.”
The game kicked off with Bonnyrigg showing first with a couple of chances with none taken. Buckie gradually pushed forward and for the whole of the opening 45 minutes probably looked more menacing.
Into the second half and again Bonnyrigg started the better side and as everyone has seen on the TV, it was the Captain himself Johnny Stewart who showed the way in the 54th minute with a super opener. He took a pass from Dean Brett out wide right and his cross cum shot sailed over the keeper's head and into the top corner to send the support into a frenzy. Of course he meant it. The goal knocked the confidence from Buckie and worse was to follow for them when George Hunter added a second only 12 minutes later with a goal worthy of winning the Goal of the Round. Up the right wing he took a pass from Dean Brett before waltzing his way along the bye line turning inside and drilling the ball past the keeper and into the net. His celebrations were a sight to behold as he raced to the sidelines with his colleagues trying hard to catch him; a truly joyful sight for the support who were in raptures. (What a signing George Hunter has been for the club with hugely important goals for them since he came to the Rose.) The gaffer then waited to see the response from Buckie and they did come into the game, but he was ready for that and 10 minutes remaining he “Parked the Bus” with the introduction of Kerr Young in defence taking off Lee Currie in midfield. This stiffened up an already rock solid backline and blew away any fight back the visitors had in mind.
For George Hunter it was a night to remember, “It was all right I think (He smiled). I was brought here to score goals and think I’m doing that. Someone said that my goal will be Goal of the Round but we’ll have to wait and see what happens tomorrow (Saturday). I don’t set myself targets I just try and score as many as possible but the chances the lads create means I have a good chance of getting a few more. That’s 9 so far and with a lot of big games coming up hopefully I’ll get on the score sheet again. It’s been a great night for the Club, a new experience and under lights for the first time and a night I’ll remember for a while.”
Robbie’s Interview.
“ Now that the dust has settled I look back on what’s been an incredible week for the Club and I’m especially pleased for the players and Committee. The pressure was on everybody but they have all stood up and delivered. The players took everything in their stride and got the result we all wanted . The whole night will leave its mark on our memories, the floodlights, the crowd, the BBC TV crew, the build up and it really couldn't have gone any better. We got a bit of luck with the first goal but George’s goal was a moment of real quality. For everyone connected to the club it was a night to remember for a very long time and I thank the crowd for that experience. On a personal note I had a few new experiences which were good but winning a game of football and getting into the hat for the 3rd round draw took precedent over everything; and we did it.”
