Bonnyrigg’s long unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt when the men from Beechwood came to visit New Dundas Park.
With the Rose defending the Auld Orchard end they conceded their first league goal of the season at home after seven minutes. The ball was crossed into the box by the impressive Cummings to Ex Falkirk, St Johnstone and Trinidad & Tobago international Samuel who laid it back into the path of Winters and guided it low past the outstretched Hay to his right.
The Rose could have equalised three minutes later after a run from McDonald through the middle released Renton to his left, who squared the ball across the box only for it to evade a sliding Grady due to a slight touch from Halliwell. From the resulting corner the Suachie keeper acrobatically tipped over a header from White.
They did equalise ten minutes later when a quick McDonald free kick over the top for Renton to chase, who rolled it back towards the oncoming Mcleish and his cross come shot was guided in by Currie to score his fourth of the season and at that point a deserved equaliser.
McDonald drew a good save from Halliwell low to his right three minutes later but it was all to turn sour for the Rose when a high foot from Currie on Cummings gave ref McLean no option but to show a straight red. Thankfully the Sauchie number 10 was able to carry on.
After shooting just wide a minute before, Cummings grabbed Sauchie’s second when he took the ball from Samuel with his back to goal and then swivelled on his right foot, turned and shot on the half volley.
If Sauchie didn’t go on to win this game than Morgan would have had several sleepness nights as with the goal at his mercy and the Rose defence already resigned to going 3-1 down he ballooned his shot against the crossbar while inside the box.
Bonnyrigg did have a couple of chances to equalise before half time, the best coming to McDonald who couldn’t keep his shot down with the keeper out of position.
Gemmill had to be replaced by Archibald early in the second half due to a nasty headknock. Ten minutes into the second half Cummings all but wrapped up the points for Sauchie, when his shot from halfway inside the Rose half curled and dipped underneath the crossbar, which appeared to catch Hay anawares.
Another injury, this time to McKenna, forced Bonnyrigg into another change with Manson coming on just before the hour, with Gray on for McLeish seven minutes later.
Bonnyrigg did have a couple of chances with headers that fell to Renton, the best being from a cross by Grady after good work down the flank but he was unfortunate that it deflected off King and over the bar. Comrie also forced a good save from Hay at point blank range with a header.
With the tie over Sauchie made a couple of substitutions and took off their star men Samuel & Cummings. The Rose’s day of misery was complete when just before the end of normal time Comrie guided a cross in from his right into an empty net.
Bonnyrigg can have no complaints as to the nature of the defeat today, as while the game was evenly contested up to the first thirty minutes with both sides playing good football, Sauchie showed how to play against ten men and made their numerical advantage pay.
