A Neil Martyniuk penalty wasn't enough for Rose as a first-half Spartans double saw the home side take all three points.

Bonnyrigg Rose made the short trip to Ainslie Park as they faced play-off chasing Spartans in cinch League Two.

Robbie Horn made two changes in the team that drew with Peterhead mid-week as Reis Peggie returned to the team after serving a suspension alongside Dean Watson.

Spartans got off to a quick start putting pressure on the Rose defence and in the 9th minute they had a ball played into the box by Cammy Russell which was headed narrowly over Paddy Martin’s net. Soon after in the 17th minute, Paddy Martin made a big save to deny Bradley Whyte the opening goal.

Spartans did go on to get the first goal of the game in the 21st minute with a low-driven strike from Blair Henderson finding the bottom-right corner to put them one ahead.

One minute after the first, Spartans almost made it two but Martin pushed away Russell’s effort.

Spartans did go on to extend their lead in the 24th minute as Ayrton Sonkur met the ball played into the box and headed in a second goal for the home side.

Bonnyrigg got their first real chance of the game in the 37th minute with Angus Mailer trying his luck inside the box but Blair Carswell was there to deny him.

Just before the break Spartans had a free kick just outside the box where Russell came close as it skimmed the roof of Martin’s net.

Rose started the second half with a bit more control over the game, and they were afforded an early lifeline after a shirt pull from Jordan Tapping resulted in a penalty. Neil Martyniuk stepped up and made no mistake from the spot and provided some hope for a Bonnyrigg Rose comeback.

Paddy Martin made another brilliant flying save to deny a Spartan's free-kick late in the game, but Bonnyrigg Rose were unable to find the equalising goal they were looking for.

Rose will be looking to get back in the win column soon, and they welcome the visit of league leaders Stenhousemuir to New Dundas Park next weekend.
