It was to be just the one point for Bonnyrigg Rose after losing the shootout to Dumbarton in the Viaplay Cup.

Bonnyrigg Rose faced League 2 opposition for the first time this season as their Viaplay Cup group stage campaign continued with a visit to the Dumbarton Football Stadium to take on Dumbarton.

Robbie Horn freshened up the side for this fixture as he made 6 changes to the side that narrowly lost out to Dundee mid-week with Mikey Andrews, Kerr Young, Keiran McGachie, Ross Gray, Robbie McGale and Callum Connolly all coming into the side.

The first half was one where chances were at a premium. The hosts had the most of the chances however with Michael Ruth flashing one past the post early on. McGachie went close soon after but he couldn't guide his header goal-wards.

It would take until the half hour mark for the next clear-cut opportunity as Mark Durnan thundered his effort off of the Rose crossbar following a scramble from a corner. Rose would have the final chance of the first period as Connolly latched onto the end of Conor Doan's cross but could only header straight at Harry Broun.

Rose came out stronger in the second half with the introduction of Alieu Faye at the break causing some early chaos amongst the Sons' backline. Dean Watson has been going in search of his first competitive goal in Rose colours and he thought he had secured it had it not been for the linesmans' flag.

Ross MacLean was the driving force for Dumbarton going forward and his diving header almost put the hosts in front but Andrews was on hand to deny him. Gregg Wylde flashed his effort over the bar shortly after when he found himself unmarked at the back-post.

Watson had been working tirelessly to breach the Dumbarton defence in the second-half and he found his way in behind on 66 minutes however he lifted the ball over the bar as well as the keeper.

Watson would have the ball in the net again with 5 to play but again the linesmans' flag was there to chop it off.

Rose ended the game strong but would have to settle for just the one point as Dumbarton prevailed in the penalty shoutout to gain the additional point that was up for grabs.

Mikey Andrews was there to deny MacLean from the spot however misses from Lee Currie and Dean Watson in the shootout meant Tony Wallace's 5th penalty was enough to win it for Dumbarton.
