On Saturday the Rose take a break from league action and face Oakley Utd as one of two second round ties remaining in the Football Nation Qualifying Cup, with the other tie featuring Civil Service Strollers and Jeanfield Swfits. The winners of the tie at Christie Gillies Park will have home advantage against the winners of the tie at New Dundas park in round three.
This is the first league encounter between the two sides since season 04/05, when Oakley had spent their third what turned out to be final season in the East Region SuperLeague. The last cup outing was in 2010 in the East of Scotland Cup where the Fifers ended the victors after a penalty shootout.
Oakley have recently changed management personnel in the past few weeks, with Stewart Kenny taking over from Richard Fox. The management change as well as changes on the playing side has appeared to have had the desired effect, with wins over Hawick & Tweedmouth on the road, a draw at Blairwood Park in their last outing with just the one reverse against Dunbar Utd. They also pulled off a surprise result (at least on paper) in the first round of this competition, by defeating Lowland League side Vale of Leithen 4-3 on their home turf.
Last Saturday was Robbie Horn's first game back in the New Dundas Park dugout and he saw his players grind out a hard fought victory against this season's surprise package Crossgates Primrose. He was pleased with the character the players showed after coming from behind and in particular the last twenty minutes when the away side were chasing for the equaliser. It was an important three points to get, especially given other results which meant that the Rose extended their lead at the top of the table. The downside to the win was another injury to the playing squad, this time it was Ross Gray who had to come off the field of play all of nine minutes after entering the field as a substitute, having been the victim of a heavy challenge. The injuries are starting to mount up and the squad isn't the biggest. However with the quality of squad at his disposal the manager should still be spoiled for choice when picking his starting XI.
Half time entertainment will come from the Bonnyrigg Rose U15 girls, who are also the match ball sponsors for tomorrow's game. Please note earlier kick off time of 1:30 p.m.
