Wednesday's VTech SMT Fife & Lothians cup final throws up a fascinating encounter between two of Midlothian's longest and oldest rivals, Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic and Newtongrange Star. It is a fitting end to both clubs' long association with the junior game, which dates back to the 1890s, that the last game should be a final.

This is Star's first appearance in a cup final in 27 years, having won the cup on four occasions (1978, 88, 90 & 91). The Rose were losing finalists two years ago and have won the cup three times (1982, 2005, 07).

The two teams have met each other three times already this season. The first encounter was a scoreless draw at New Victoria Park in August with the Rose victorious in the other two encounters at New Dundas Park, one of those being in the Scottish Junior Cup.

Bonnyrigg lifted their fourth SuperLeague title last Saturday but for their part Star have finished the league season well, with recent home victories over Bo'ness United, Linlithgow Rose and Jeanfield Swifts. Form however goes out the window for cup games and both teams will be looking to sign off from the junior grade with a cup victory.
